Japanese Culture Influences

Rodney, Eugene, Pablo, Xavier and I had a talk at COFA - Siggraph night - about the cultural influence of animators who were brought up in different cultures.
This is PPT I made for talk.

ロッドニーとユージーンとパブロとザビエルと私、計5人でNSW大学の構内でスピーチをしました。テーマは海外育ちのアニメーターの文化的影響。以下は私のプレゼンテーション内容。



Brought up in 60's Japan, my biggest influence was Osamu Tezuka on TV and manga. I haven't seen Disney since we went to movie twice a year and my brother chose Godzilla and Gamera and I had no say. My first Disney film was Mary Poppins when I was 14.
昭和30-40年代に子供時代を過ごした私の一番のお気に入りは、テレビでも漫画でも手塚治虫。年2回の映画は兄がゴジラとガメラなどばかり選ぶので、ディズニーを経験せず。初めて見たのは14歳でメリーポピンズ。 



As a teenager I got into girl graphic novels. My choice for a future profession  was graphic novel artist. I took some work to publishers to get their comments and I got involved with self publishing groups. But it's not easy make a living in comics - working as a teacher is more sensible. I went to a selective school to study further... what parents didn't know was I'd changed my career choice to animator, and passed the exam at Telecom and Toei Animation while I was in high school. 
10代で少女マンガにのめり込み、漫画家になるつもりで出版社に持ち込んだり、同人誌を出版する。 しかし漫画家で食べて行くのは難しいから、教師になれるよう進学校で勉学に励むはずが、親に隠れてアニメーター修行を積む。在校中にテレコムと東映動画受験し、両方実技合格。

Japanese don't use a disk and work on top peg which is easy to flip and draw on flat surface. 
アニメスタジオ内部。右回りに左上からスタジオジブリ、ディズニー、日本人のトレース台、先日逝去した今敏監督の机(合掌)、平均的アニメーターの仕事ぶり。日本人は回るディスクを使用せず水平に近いので、上タップがめくりながら描くのにも便利。

日本の絵コンテ例、クレヨンしんちゃんより。縦列なので横の動きが見やすい。 



Examples of Western storyboad. The Dumm Bunnies (Canada) and Flipper (Australia) both by me. When it's on side panels it interferes with the camera angles when two characters talk. 
西洋の絵コンテ例。ダムバニーズ(カナダ)とフリッパー(オーストラリア)小生作品。横列の際、登場人物の会話と顔の向きに無理が出る。

Comic and illustration work during working as animator in Japan, for a girls magazine published by Sanrio who own Hello Kitty.
日本のアニメーター時代の副業としての サンリオ出版「いちご新聞」より。

Working in Yoram Gross Film Studio, Sydney as layout artist. The Australian Dot series had no consistency with character designs.
オーストラリアのヨーラムグロス・スタジオでドット・シリーズのレイアウトを担当。キャラデザインに統一感がない。
I had the chance to redesign main characters for ' Dot goes to Hollywood ' in the Japanese style. Legs are stumpy like in Astroboy.
「ドットちゃんハリウッドに行く」でメインキャラクターのデザイン担当。 手塚風に足がぽってり太くなるのがアトムの影響。

Australian Book Blinky Bill becomes animation for first time. A competition was held for character redesign and mine was chosen despite very Japanese style. Clockwise from top left, original book - my final design - book illustration by Ariel - movie poster design by Junko - merchandising illustration by Jung-ae - Blinky Bill 3 TV series design by Pablo. For marketing purpose cuteness sells.
オーストラリアの原作本ブリンキービルのアニメ化に際して、スタジオ内でキャラクターデザイン公募があり、思い切り日本ぽい私のデザインが最終決定に。右回りで左上より原作本、最終決定稿、アリエルの絵本イラスト、青山純子の映画ポスター、チョンエーの商品用デザイン、パブロのブリンキービル3のTVシリーズ用デザイン。
In the 80's there was a Koala boom in Japan. All had beady eyes like Hello Kitty. Later on the studio attempted to sell the Australian-styled Blinky Bill to Japan but was unsuccessful because there already was a TV series called ' Blinky the Magic Koala'. Clockwise from top left, Koala Song record - Hello Kitty - Blinky the Magic Koala - koala stickers - Koala snack character.
80年代はコアラブームの時代だが、ほとんどはハローキティのイメージを受けて点目だった。オーストラリアの「ブリンキービル」の日本輸出を 試みたが「不思議なコアラブリンキー」と名前まで同じTVシリーズがあったため不成功に終わる。左上より右回りでコアラのレコード、ハローキティ、不思議なコアラブリンキー、コアラのシール、コアラのマーチ。
had an opportunity to design Angel Babies animation characters based on American design rough. Again I pushed for a Japanese style but this wasn't chosen. At least I enjoyed designing them.
エンゼルベイビーのアニメキャラクターデザインで、またまた日本風に描いてみたら没に。描いてる間は楽しかったけどね。
This is final character design for the pilot film done by Ivylo. Pretty close to the original design roughs.
これが最終決定デザインのパイロット。イバイロのデザインでオリジナルに近い。
I searched Angel Babies before COFA talk and found this. Now Angel Babies are a Nintendo DS game. I'm sure it's a shooting game for hunting down babies one by one.
大学のスピーチの直前、エンゼルベイビーのその後をグーグルしてこれを発見。任天堂DSゲームらしい。一匹ずつ撃ち落とすシューティングゲームだろう。
Three Angel Babies in one glance. On the  left side are my designs, the right top from the pilot film, the bottom right are the game characters. Kids merchandising are chosen by not only kids but mothers who see the cover artwork.
エンゼルベイビー3種を一面で。左側が私のデザイン、右上パイロットフィルム、右下ゲームキャラクター。幼児向け商品は子供と母親の両方が包装デザインで購入決定される。

  1. Your designs for the "Angel Babies" are really cute. The designs they went with look rather generic, and the less said about the CGI abominations, the better. I like to think this idea tanked and fell into obscurity because they didn't choose your designs, since I certainly haven't heard of it until you brought it up.

    Your redesign for Dot is adorable, too. I tend to have a soft spot for Osamu Tezuka and any artwork inspired by him.
